UVU’s Yates Earns Warrior Accolade
ATLANTA – He led Utah Valley to a pair of ranked wins over the weekend and now Wolverine sophomore attackman Blake Yates has been named the MCLA Division I Warrior Player of the Week for the period ending March 3.
Utah Valley opened the weekend on Friday night with a matchup against No. 14 Arizona State in Orem and the contest turned into a shootout. Thanks to five goals and a dime from the Sandy, Utah, product, the Wolverines were able to post the 19-16 victory.
In a game marred by snow and high winds against No. 6 Northeastern on Saturday, the pace of play was slowed considerably. Still Yates delivered, dishing out three assists – setting up a third of UVU’s goals – in the 9-3 win that was called after three quarters.
In the two games, Yates scored five goals along with dishing out four assists.
“Blake is the type of person that makes those around him better because he genuinely cares about them,” said Utah Valley coach Brian Barnhill. “This is true on the field and off the field. On field he has a great lacrosse IQ and is an incredible athlete with a relentless approach to the game. He takes great pride in his ride and will consistently outwork his defenseman to get the ball back in order to gain another offensive possession.
“Blake has shown a knack for scoring points and it's really been showing early on this season. But his focus isn't just on his points, as he is the first to celebrate a teammates score. One of his strengths is that he knows how to facilitate his teammates so they play to their own strength while finding his own way into shooting spots.
“As a sophomore he is just scratching the surface of his ability, already approaching 100 points. We're excited to see him continue to improve his already stellar play.”
For his efforts earning the Warrior Player of the Week, Yates will receive a Warrior Burn XP2-O – a $120 value. Warrior is a proud sponsor of the MCLA.
