Charlotte’s McHugh Named Player of Week
ATLANA – After leading UNC-Charlotte to a ranked victory against a conference opponent, 49ers senior attackman Declan McHugh is the MCLA Division II Warrior Player of the Week for the period ending Feb. 11.
With Charlotte playing in a tight game with No. 18 Wake Forest on the road, the Gastonia, N.C., product delivered a hat trick and two assists in the 49ers 7-6 triumph.
McHugh factored in on 78 percent of Charlotte’s goals on the afternoon.
“Declan represents everything that we have tried to build over the past few years at Charlotte,” said UNC-Charlotte coach Nick Nedvesky. “He is the heartbeat of the team on the field through his passion and energy.
“Declan is also one of the best shooters in the MCLA at any division, as proven by his games at nationals last year against Missouri State and Air Force. A man of little words and one of the best advocates of leading by example, Declan works as hard as anybody I’ve ever coached.
“In the showdown against Wake Forest when we needed a goal, Declan provided it. He said to me after the game: ‘These are the types of games I play lacrosse for.’ Knowing Declan, he could have had zero points and had the same exact reaction after that game; it’s just the type of person he is.”
For his efforts earning the Warrior Player of the Week, McHugh will receive a Warrior Burn XP2-O – a $120 value. Warrior is a proud sponsor of the MCLA.
