Eckert, Guarino Named Players of Month
ATLANTA – After leading their respective teams to multiple ranked wins, Virginia Tech senior goalie William Eckert and Rhode Island senior attackman Anthony Guarino have been named the 101 Lacrosse MCLA Player of the Month for February.
The Hokies posted a 7-0 mark for the month and are the No. 1 ranked team in MCLA Division I helped by the Nokesville, Va., product. So far this season, Eckert has turned away 67.9 percent of the shots that have come his way, including 31 saves in Virginia Tech’s three ranked victories.
Eckert has been the linchpin of a defense that is allowing a paltry 4.17 goals per game.
“Will is a tremendous leader and the backbone of our team,” said Virginia Tech coach Panchito Ojeda. “He has stepped up to not only make great saves, but continues to improve our overall defensive play.”
Coming off a visit to the 2022 Division II national championship game, Rhode Island has picked right back up this spring led by the Medford, N.Y., native. Guarino has 21 goals and four assists in five games – a 4.2 points per game clip.
Two of No. 2 URI’s wins have come against Top 20 competition and the only loss for the 4-1 Rams is a setback to Division I No. 15 Northeastern in which Guarino had four markers.
“While everyone is going to look at the gaudy statistics, Anthony’s impact stretches far beyond the box score,” said Rhode Island coach Larry Madeira. “He is the type of player who has the ability to not only stuff the stat sheet, but make everyone on the field better.
“As a four-year starter who has experienced the highs and the lows of this program, Anthony has taken on a key leadership role within the team, demanding excellence from every player on the roster.”
The winners of the MCLA Player of the Month will receive a custom award plaque compliments of 101 Lacrosse.
