ALC D-I Recap: Things Getting Clearer
APPOMATTOX, Va. -- The Atlantic Lacrosse Conference (ALC) tournament picture is becoming clearer with the North settling the standings with with James Madison, Pittsburgh and West Virginia all tangling this weekend. Clemson, Liberty and Virginia Tech all pick up big, out of conference wins.
Division I - North
Pittsburgh 7, Purdue 6
The Panthers got the ship righted and relied on their goalie, who once again came up big giving up just six goals to the Boilermakers. Meanwhile, the offense showed some balanced scoring with five different players registering points.
James Madison 12, Pittsburgh 11
In their first game in divisional play, the Dukes jumped out to a 5-1 lead, only to hand it back as the Panthers scored seven unanswered goals to take an 8-5 lead into halftime. The third quarter featured another Dukes run and the score heading into the final frame was tied at nines. The Dukes were able to sneak this one out 12-11 and move to 1-0 in ALC divisional play.
Liberty 13, NC State 10
Liberty was on fire out of the gates, jumping to 5-3 lead after one and still led, 8-4 at halftime. There was no quit in the Wolfpack as they battled back, closing it to one in the second half. But the Flames defense was too much as they locked the door and finished the game with a 3-2 run and the 13-10 victory.
James Madison 12, West Virginia 11
After squeaking by the Panthers, the Dukes turned around to face WVU. The game was back-and-forth, ending in a tie at each quarter except the final frame. WVU had chances late, but were unable to secure a tying goal and the Dukes started divisional play 2-0.
Liberty 13, Florida 11
It appeared Liberty had a malfunction with their flame cannon and instead of shooting out fire it shot out a Gator as Florida raced out to a 4-0 lead. However, the Flames settled down and rattled off nine unanswered goals en route to a 13-11 win.
Division I - South
Clemson 10, Arizona State 11
The Tigers took on the Sun Devils in the first of two road games. Clemson jumped out to a 3-1 lead at the end of one and 5-3 at half. However a six goal third quarter for the Sun Devils got them out in front, 9-7 going into the fourth. The Tigers closed the gap and had two chances to tie late, but a huge save from the Sun Devil goalie sealed the win for them.
Clemson 13, Grand Canyon 9
After dropping the game to the Sun Devils, the Tigers were looking for a bounce-back game and they got it, as they jumped out early on the Lopes resulting in a 9-4 halftime lead. The third quarter was more defensive, but the Tigers shut it down to lead 11-5 going into the final frame. They would hold on to win, 13-9.
Virginia Tech 16, Arizona 10
The Hokies were a little slow off the bus, allowing the Wildcats to jump out to a 4-1 bulge after one, which ballooned to 5-1 in the second. The second and third quarters were all Hokies, as they outscored Arizona 12-3 resulting in a 13-7 lead going into the final frame. The Wildcats weren’t done, as they got the first two goals of the final quarter and closed the door en route to a 16-10 win.
Virginia Tech 13, Arizona State 10
The first half was a shootout as both teams raced out to goals. VT struck first, but it was back-and-forth and tied at 5-5 before the Hokies shot out to a 9-7 halftime lead. Twice the Sun Devils closed it to a one-goal game, but each time the Hokies offense was able to get another goal and fight off the surge. The Hokies finished the final frame outsourcing the Sun Devils 3-1 and winning 13-10.
