CCSU’s Colon is Goalie of the Week
ATLANTA – After leading Central Conn. State to its first-ever win over an MCLA Division I opponent, Blue Devils junior netminder Mason Colon earned MCLA Division II PEARL Goalie of the Week honors for the period ending Feb. 16.
On the road to play Temple in Philadelphia, Colon turned away 12 shots in the first half to shutout the Owls and give the Devils a 3-0 lead at the break.
The Newtown, Conn., product made another dozens saves in the second half, allowing Central Conn. to head to overtime with Temple.
A pair of saves in the extra time provided the Devils with the win.
“Mason was questionable coming with a broken finger, but he taped it up and said he was giving it a go and from the opening faceoff put the team on his back,” said Central Conn. coach Brendan Frobel. “At the end of regulation someone said, ‘Who is the hero going to be?’ I responded, win or lose, Mason is already the MVP.
“He was unbelievably clutch, keeping us in this game for four quarters against a real tough D-I team who controlled possession all game long.”
For his efforts in earning the Pearl’s Performance of the Week, Colon will receive a prize package from Guardian Pearl, a ball that lasts longer than the rest and never greases. Guardian Pearl is the proud partner of the MCLA.
