Santa Clara’s Lencioni is Goalie of Week
ATLANTA – After leading the Broncos into the semifinals of the WCLL tournament, Santa Clara junior netminder Matt Lencioni has earned Pearl’s Division I Goalie of the Week honors for the period ending April 21.
Santa Clara hit the road for the first round of the WCLL tournament to take on second-seeded Nevada and thanks to 13 saves from the Alamo, Calif., product, the Broncos managed to squeeze out of a 10-8 victory.
For the afternoon, Lencioni had a save percentage of 61.9 percent.
“Matt had a big game,” said Santa Clara coach Greg Mengis. “The Broncos were up comfortably, 10-3 late in the third. We put in our subs and Nevada made a run with five unanswered goals. Matt came up with some huge saves in the fourth to stop the comeback. He also did a great job clearing for us.”
For his efforts in earning the Pearl’s Performance of the Week, Lencioni will receive a prize package from Guardian Pearl, a ball that lasts longer than the rest and never greases. Guardian Pearl is the proud partner of the MCLA.
