Florida Drops Sonoma
PETALUMA, Calif. – One week after upending a ranked Texas A&M squad on a buzzer-beater in Gainesville, the Florida men's lacrosse team found itself heading into overtime Sunday against Sonoma State on the opposite side of the country.
Amidst a raucous Seawolves crowd, the Gators found themselves on the ropes early in the extra period after a violation on the opening faceoff handed possession to Sonoma State.
Florida’s defensive unit, which had surrendered a late run in regulation to the Seawolves, wasted no time regaining its resolve and quickly forced a turnover.
Following a dead ball timeout and a successful clear, the Gator offense took the reins and finished what the defense had started, silencing the home crowd after beating the Sonoma State defense and netminder to hand the Gators their first win in California since 2010.
Florida, now 6-2 on the season, faces a quick turnaround as a match up with No. 7 Michigan State awaits on Wednesday.
The Gators will then conclude their west coast swing against Stanford on Thursday.
