SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - The Dominican men's lacrosse team (2-1) posted a 1-1 weekend at home, defeating Utah Valley (0-3), 11-10 in double overtime in its home opener at Kennelly Field on Friday night before falling to San Diego State, 15-7, on Saturday.

Against Utah Valley, Maxwell Pierce led the way for Dominican with four goals -- including the overtime winner -- and one assist. Junior defender Blaise Demaree held the Wolverines’ offense in check, leading the team with seven ground balls and an exceptional defensive showing.

Spencer Ramer gave Dominican the edge in faceoffs with 17 draws wins to go with four ground balls. Bailey Ferguson had a strong presence in goal after seeing 29 shots from the Wolverines and coming away with 15 saves.

The teams were tight in their offensive pressure, putting out five shots or more in the first 3 quarters. UVU led 7-6 heading into the break, but the Penguins scored four unanswered goals in the third quarter.

With Dominican leading by three in the fourth, it was held to only three shots and the Wolverines were able to put the pressure on with 10 shots and three goals to tie the game and send it to overtime.

Overtime only saw one shot from Dominican and two from Utah Valley before Maxwell was able to find the net for the winner in double overtime.

Dominican’s second game of the weekend was against San Diego State (2-1), where they fell 15-7 at home.

Despite two goals from both Jack Gross and Harrison Rae, the Penguin’s were unable to keep up with the pace of the Aztecs’ offense. Dominican kept a close game scoring two goals to SDSU’s three goals in the first quarter.

The Aztecs ran away with the game scoring five goals to go into halftime leading by five. SDSU showed their strength by out-scoring the Penguins 7-4 in the second half. Despite the scoreline, the Penguins showed heart and continued to play tough and come out with two goals per quarter in the second half.

The Penguin’s next game will be Saturday, March 3 at 1 p.m. against Stanford in the conference opener at Dominican’s home field. The team hopes to rally and defend their home field against the Cardinal.
