Indiana Hosts "Stick it to Stigma"
(from an Indiana press release)
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University men’s lacrosse team is excited to announce the continuation of a special partnership with "U Bring Change 2 Mind" (UBC2M), an IU student organization, to sponsor the second annual Stick It To Stigma lacrosse game supporting mental health awareness.
UBC2M is the national research pilot program for Bring Change 2 Mind’s College Toolbox Project to develop a methodology for tracking how student attitudes around mental illness and stigma change over time. This year, the event will include three games that will be held at Indiana on March 24-26.
The first of these games against Tennessee will be streamed from Bring Change 2 Mind’s Twitter account on Friday, March 24 at 7 p.m. EDT.
“It’s impressive to see the continued dedication from our team to raise awareness for mental illness," said David Haggerty, an IU lacrosse alumnus and BC2M ambassador. "When I started this event, I was nervous that my teammates and coaches would look at me differently because this cause is often associated with weakness. Instead, their acceptance and support for normalizing this topic has been remarkable.
"Over the last year, I’ve had teammates, university staff, and even complete strangers tell me that the work we’re doing has changed their perception of mental illness. It’s fantastic to see this event evolve and continue to break down barriers and challenge stereotypes around men and athletes’ relationship with mental health.”
To raise awareness, the team will be wearing lime green chinstraps and warm-ups with the UBC2M logo during their games against Tennessee, Davenport and Western Michigan. This color, which is the official color of mental health, signifies the team’s ongoing commitment to ending the stigma around mental illness.
Additionally, members of the team will be taking part in a social campaign, #MindYourMind, to advocate for the importance of protecting your brain on and off the field through speaking out, seeking help and serving as an ally to others by listening and showing support.
“Mental health issues on college campuses and among athletic teams are often overlooked or mistreated," said Indiana senior captain Matt Kelley. "As a team, we believe it is important for us to bring awareness to mental health issues and do our best to ignite conversation and acceptance within the IU community. This weekend of games allows us to play a game that we love for a bigger cause.”
The team, BC2M, and UBC2M extend their sincerest gratitude to ZimaGear for their generous donation and for their support of this important cause.
Together, we will use this platform to start, and continue, the conversation about mental health.
