Hoosiers Release 2017 Schedule
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University men’s lacrosse team has released its 2017 schedule, and it features 14 games, with 10 of those coming against out of conference opponents from the CCLA, SELC, and PCLL.
The Hoosiers head to Pittsburgh in the first week of the season to take on George Washington and Pittsburgh at the Cost Center. The Feb. 18 contest will mark the first-ever meeting with George Washington. IU will face a tough Pittsburgh team on Feb. 19 in a rematch from last year that the Hoosiers won, 10-6.
Following the trip to Pennsylvania, Indiana will travel to East Lansing, Mich., for a weekend against new and old blood from the CCLA. On Feb. 25, the Hoosiers will faceoff with Michigan State, a perennial Top 25 team.
“We are excited to get them back on the schedule," said senior captain Matt Kelley (Rockville, Md.) about the Spartans. "My freshman year, we went up there for the first game of the season and it didn’t go exactly how we wanted, so it will be good to have another shot at them early in the year.”
Following the game with the Spartans, IU will have a quick turnaround for an early game with a CCLA newcomer Minnesota.
Indiana will open its home schedule during the first week of March against conference rival Miami (Ohio). Miami ended the Hoosiers' season last year and head coach Pete Nelson knows they have to be ready for another battle this year.
“Each year the competition within our division has gotten better; you saw it last year with Miami beating us and playing Purdue in the championship," Nelson said. "We know our in-conference games are important. We’ve learned to not look past one game at a time.”
After a weekend off, the Hoosiers will be at home again for three games against three highly skilled opponents, starting March 24 with Tennessee. That is followed on March 25 against Top 25 opponent Davenport before the Hoosiers cap off the weekend against Western Michigan on March 26.
“We know playing three games in three days is tough, but it’s what you have to do to prepare for the conference championship and national championship,” said senior captain Jack Delaney (Needham, Mass.).
Indiana will travel to Baltimore the weekend of April 1 to compete in the Battle of Baltimore, which features 10 teams from four conferences. The Hoosiers will face Elon on March 31, followed by a rematch from the last two years on Saturday against Northeastern. The weekend will be wrapped up with the first-ever meeting with NC State.
The Hoosiers will conclude their final three games of the season against GRLC divisional opponents before preparing for the GRLC tournament. Indiana will travel to Normal, Ill., on April 8 to face Illinois State followed by a game in Champaign, Ill., with Illinios on April 9. The final game of the regular season will take place at home versus heated rival Purdue on April 15 at 3 p.m.
